I've been given some pretty difficult assignments in my time, but one stands out above and beyond the rest. It was Valentine's Day and my class was scheduled to have an in-class essay on Joyce's Ulysses. Much to my shock the teacher announced that instead of an essay he was giving us a surprise assignment which was going to be much more difficult. I didn't know how that could be possible, since the book was my literary equivalent to kryptonite. Our new task was to compose over the next forty five minutes a love letter.... without using the word love. If you feel up to it, give this task a try. It's so hard. I'm trying to think of some ways to say "I love you," without actually doing so... Here's what I've come up with.
- You're the Squirtle to my Charmander.
- If I saw a penny on the ground I'd pretend not to notice it so you would pick it up and have good luck.
- You're so sweet it could give a person diabetes. Or a cavity.
- I'd let you cut me in line for the bathroom, even if my bladder was about to explode.
Obviously some more brainstorming is definitely in order! Have you got any ideas?
The word love is majorly overused. I'm definitely guilty of throwing around the words love and hate with reckless abandon. I love puppies. I'd love to go to yoga. I love this song. It's gotten to the point that love is just another four letter word, used so frequently that it's lost its meaning and resonance. Every time I hang up the phone with my mom I throw in a "Love you, bye." I might as well use a four letter curse word, because they too are used so often that they have lost some of their umph as well. And then in the moment when my heart feels so full that it might burst and I desperately want to express how much I love someone, there are no words. Because I've said love so many times before and there's nothing in the dictionary powerful enough to communicate what I'm so strongly feeling. It's like a modern day boy who cried wolf, but with a word and feeling.

Sometimes kids really do know best.
I think part of why the word love is said so much is because no one really knows what it means. Can love even be defined? It's so abstract and different for each person, plus the intensity and strength of all emotions can vary. When I was a kid my grandfather used to cut out and send me those "Love Is" comics.

Between them and Disney movies, it's no wonder that my idea of love is so screwy. Having divorced parents probably doesn't do me any favors either.

Even though the Hallmark-hating cynic in me wants to loathe Valentine's Day, I can't help but get excited. I remember in grade school we'd decorate shoeboxes and leave them on our desks to grow stuffed with valentines. And then as soon as you got home you'd empty it out, separating the cute valentines and ones from your best friends from all the others. Were you a maker of homemade valentines or did you buy the ones from the store? While I don't have mailbox coated in construction paper cutouts and glitter, I do have a valentine. ME. Today I've just been chilling, watching romantic movies and wearing my new V-day dress. My mom got it for my younger sister but she didn't want it, so now it's mine. Sort of like hand me downs but in reverse... Not that I'm complaining!

How could you not feel like a princess while wearing a dress that's so pretty?
What are your favorite romantic movies? Mine are...
- Moulin Rouge
- Romeo & Juliet (both the Baz Luhrmann and Zefferelli versions... I remember watching the older one is school and that everyone went ballistic when Romeo's ass was on the screen. It was an all girl's school, so everyone was a bit desperate. Even though I know what's going to happen, I always get so anxious and am on the edge of my seat hoping that maybe this time things will turn out differently, AKA a slightly lower number of dead bodies as the film draws to a close.
- Atonement
- Mr. And Mrs. Smith (Marriage. Machine guns. Need I say more?)
- Harold and Maude

Whatever love means to you, I hope your Valentine's Day is full of it.

Happy Valentine's Day, Rachael! I"m going to help kill the cynic in you by throwing love your way. Mwaha.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite romantic movies..
-Atonement
-Dirty Dancing
-COLD MOUNTAIN
-All Disney movies
-How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
-The Ugly Truth
I realize that a few of those are romantic comedies but whatev. They work for me.
PS. Cuuuuuuute dress.
PPS. You're the Squirtle to my Charmander.
i think this is probably the funniest post i've read in a long time! the pokemon reference = classic. aww the kids' definitions of love are so cute, kids say the darndest things ;). i really like the assignment your teacher gave you! 2 days in paris is a great lovey dovey movie
ReplyDeleteAww this is seriously an uber sweet post and the replied by children on what love is totally made my heart melt. I'm not really a pro-Valentine's day person but it's still nice to celebrate it and feel loved whether or not it is why a boyfriend, friends, or family. And I think your teacher's brilliant in coming up with the idea of writing a love letter without using the word 'love'.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your V-Day dress! Sooo adorable! Do you where it is from, by any chance?
ReplyDeleteI don't think love can be really defined. I think it means something different to everyone.
This was a really sweet post, Rachael. How about...you are the ruby converse to my curls? (:

"You're the Squirtle to my Charmander." You are my hero.
ReplyDeleteKylee!
ReplyDeleteThe dress is from a store called Varga (www.vargastore.com) and is in a mall near where I live. I don't believe the dress is on the website, but you can also find it at http://fredflare.com/customer/product.php?productid=5557&cat=303. Fredflare is such a cute site. I like to go on and make believe that I'm not broke. ;)

Gorgeous dress my dear :-) And your observations on love are hilarious and insightful...hehe
ReplyDeleteI'm not a big fan of romantic movies/romcoms, but I have friends who usually bully me into going and watching them anyway ;)

This is an awesome dress! And I think you're so right: The word "love" is said so often that expressing real love is totally hard.
ReplyDeleteI love to make cards myself - but this year, I didn't give cards to my loved ones, I decorated a cake for them because I know they love chocolate cake.
I think my all-time-favourite romantic film is "10 things I hate about you". :)
Your 'love' ideas are great, I cracked up at the Pokemon references! That dress is so pretty :) I've just realised, looking at my DVD collection, that I don't really have any romantic films. This must be rectified! City of Angels is my favourite, it's so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteLove covers such a huge spectrum of things... partners, siblings, children. So I don't think it really can be defined. Love comes in all different forms, and I think the only way to truly express it is to evoke a feeling in another. Words will never even compare to the feeling of being loved... it just is. Whoosh.. you were right.. this whole 'analyze love' thing is tricky!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the eautiful comment... it really was something I needed to hear. I am so blessed to have you in my life Rachael. I guess you could say that I LOVE you :)
Happy Valentine's Day!

Aww such a sweet post! The cut in line for the bathroom analogy cracked me up, because I pee ALL THE TIME and the BF always rips on me for it. Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet were both on TV last night! They're two of my favorites, along with Atonement (!) and TITANIC. Best movie of all time. Happy Valentine's Day love!
ReplyDeleteFor me to let someone use the bathroom ahead of me -- that is definitely true love. I have a bladder the size of a pea!! ;)
ReplyDeleteI remember liking "Ever After," but that was years ago. I'm not a fan of romantic movies these days, because they're all so fake!! I guess that kind of is the point, though...
Hope you had a great day!
<3 <3
Happy (slightly belated) Valentine's Day, hun! I always get excited for Valentine's Day for pretty much the same reason... I remember the shoebox moments from being a kid :) I always handed out store bought cards, but I thought they were amazing all the same. Kids are fantastical.
ReplyDeleteBeing the Disney fiend that I am, I adore any Disney love story... especially Lady & The Tramp and Beauty & The Beast. I'm glad you were able to enjoy your Valentines :)
your comment made me smile so much!! you have a full week ahead of you with surprises, joys, maybe some trials, but all in all..its a glorious mystery!! :) love it!!
ReplyDeletei LOVE how to lose a guy in 10 days!
Umm I also love how to lose a guy in 10 days. never gets old :)
ReplyDeleteyoure beautiful. hope youre doing well!

Rachael, you always come up with the most unique and touching and personalized posts. My hat is off to you!
ReplyDeleteThis is precisely the reason WHY I hate Disney movies. The older ones, anyway, with all the happily ever afters...it gave me a screwy idea of what love is, too. But love isn't perfect. It's screwed up, it's twisted, it's mostly selfish, and it's a ton of pain and struggles. But in the end, it's always worth it, and without it, us humans just have a big hole in our hearts. So love? It's a essential, necessary element in life, and it's what makes us HUMAN.
Oh, my God--I remember that Romeo and Juliet too and we all just about died when we saw Romeo's ass! It was hilarious.
ReplyDeleteI love your new dress. And all your creative ways to say love without the love!
aw hun ,i love this post!! seroiusly, it is so true!! Love is thrown around so much, I don't even know what it is actually supposed to mean. And, does it really have to be something intense? Hmm.. interesting thoughts. Looooove romantic movies. ahh i agree Atonement is soo so amazing!!! pretty dress too :) have a good day love
