Today got off to a bumpy start. I woke up and fixed myself a bowl of oat bran. Nothing particularly exciting about that. My mom walked in while I was noshing an asked what smelled so orgasmical. Those weren't her EXACT words, but I'm sure you get the gist. I introduced her to the world of oat bran and she decided to give it a try. I watched as she prepared a serving and then poured a good chunk of it down the sink, saying that it was "so much." Rationally I understand her logic. Oat bran does have magical expanding powers that remind me of a chia pet on crack.

It groooooows!!
However, Mr. ED started shrieking louder than a chimp during a national banana shortage. My mom has issues of her own which can be very triggering and make doing what I know is right much more difficult. Seeing her pour out some of her food made me feel uber guilty, like I should have done it too. But I soldiered on and finished my bowl. Gotta show ED who's boss, right?
That's enough ED foolishness for now. After The Great Oat Debacle of 09' I trekked to the DMV. There are many things I would rather do than spend my morning languishing at the DMV, including listening to "It's a Small World" repeatedly for five hours. I did hear one funny tidbit while waiting though. The picture-taking lady (complete with the most ghetto fab press on nails I have ever seen) was trying to coax a smile out of a man for his ID photo. She finally exclaimed, "Smile like Tiger Woods!" I don't know how much Tiger is smiling these days, but her words definitely got a giggle out of me.

You showed a lot of strength this morning by finishing your oats, after seeing your mother pour some of hers down the sink. Rationally, you know that's "bad", and that you shouldn't do that, but seeing it done by an authority figure/role-model can make it seem like it's okay and acceptable.
ReplyDeleteBut that's ED talking! You did yourself proud by doing the right thing, by finishing. Definitely a kick in the teeth for ED.
Your words make me smile... I really needed the smile, as the Nutritionist appointment was an epic fail! So thank you, thank you so much.
Keep doing yourself proud. :)
Love,
Eleanor. xo
thanks so much for stopping by my blog girl :)
ReplyDeletemajor props for finishing the oats dear, my mom can throw me off as well. we just have to remember that this is about us, not anyone else we don't have to let other's actions affect us.
happy weekend!!
Ah! I'm sorry that your mom has food issues of her own, that is not something you should have to deal with. But despite what your ED tells you, you know that the serving of oat bran you had was just the right amount for your body, and there is nothing "bad" about it! Awesome that you were able to tune out those negative thoughts and finish the bowl. Oh man, the DMV is my definition of hell. Your picture-taker lady with the press on nails reminds me of some sketch from SNL or Mad TV or something...i don't remember exactly how it went but it's really funny!
ReplyDeletemy mom is the same way about oatbran though..she says it makes her tummy feel sticky..which is totally understandable!1 I however, like you, ALWAYS finish my oats!! :) :) whoo! im so glad you can be aware of EDS gross voice
ReplyDeleteI am so proud of you for the Oat Bran.. It can be rough sometimes when family members are triggering. I struggle with this a lot, but I always try to remember that everyone's needs are different.
